DHAKA, June 22 (Xinhua) -- Bangladesh recorded its highest single-day toll of five COVID-19 deaths this year on Sunday, bringing the tally to 29,515 since the start of the pandemic, the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
The statistics showed 36 new cases of COVID-19 in the country in the past 24 hours as of 8:00 a.m. local time Sunday.
Bangladesh has reported 433 COVID-19 cases and 16 deaths so far this year, the DGHS said.
Amid a fresh rise in COVID-19 infections in several neighboring countries, the Bangladeshi interim government has asked people to refrain from traveling to those destinations unless absolutely necessary.
The DGHS has instructed relevant departments to enhance health screening and surveillance measures at all ports to contain the spread of the infection.
